Ambassadors

Our Ambassadors are volunteers who have pledged to undertake outreach work in their locality, advising meadow owners and managers. They have been through a 2-3 year training programme with us, to help them understand our survey and research methods, so they can apply a scientific approach to assessing management of existing floodplain meadows, and help in the restoration of meadows. After their training has been completed, we continue to offer ongoing support and training to maintain their skills and share with them latest research. We now have 47 Ambassadors, spread across the country, each allocated to a county that contains floodplain meadows. You can use the map to find out whether there is an FMP Ambassador near you, who you can approach for advice.

Biography

The training and guidance I have received from the FPM ambassadors course will help me provide information and advice for farmers and the wider community of land managers of NGO in Cumbria. The training has been very useful, and sharing experinces with other fledgling ambassadors inspiring and useful. I work for the Wildlife Trust in Cumbria, on multiple grassland restoration projects, mostly in Eden and some in the Lake District National Park. My work involves survey and assessment, talking with landowners and land managers, the practical side of restoration using contractors and writing management plans. I have found it difficult to be directly involved in floodplain meadows. Many of these in the County are bunded to prevent flooding, separating the river from its floodplain, and creating flooding problems downstream. I also undertake small contracts called PA1 for farmers who have grassland to restore as part of their agri-environment scheme agreements. These are generally upland hill farms.
