Ambassadors

Our Ambassadors are volunteers who have pledged to undertake outreach work in their locality, advising meadow owners and managers. They have been through a 2-3 year training programme with us, to help them understand our survey and research methods, so they can apply a scientific approach to assessing management of existing floodplain meadows, and help in the restoration of meadows. After their training has been completed, we continue to offer ongoing support and training to maintain their skills and share with them latest research. We now have 47 Ambassadors, spread across the country, each allocated to a county that contains floodplain meadows. You can use the map to find out whether there is an FMP Ambassador near you, who you can approach for advice.

I work for Natural England in a national role as a River Restoration Programme Senior Adviser. Biography

In my early years as an Ambassador, I was Reserves Officer and then Manager at Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, where I managed Clattinger Farm Meadows SSSI and SAC, one of the finest examples of lowland floodplain meadow in the UK, and two other MG4 grassland sites: Upper Waterhay Meadows SSSI and Morningside Meadows. I now work for the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, where I head up their landscape-scale conservation programme in the UK and champion all things wetland. I'm happy to provide advice and guidance to floodplain managers across Wiltshire, but am also interested in hearing from landowners in the Somerset, Gloucestershire and the Cambridgeshire Fens looking to restore or enhance floodplain land.

Biography

I work as Nature Conservation Adviser for the National Trust in South West England, and my role involves providing advice and support to National Trust staff and tenant farmers on floodplain meadow management and restoration, alongside other habitats. I have always had an interest in plants and vegetation communities, and the skills I have learnt during the ambassador programme have enabled me to gain a deeper understanding of these rare and unique habitats. Away from work, I live in Wiltshire, and I have a fondness for the Cotswolds river systems. I am keen to use my ambassador skills to work with farmers, landowners, and land managers to improve our understanding of existing floodplain meadows and restore more of these special places. Please get in touch if you'd like to discuss a particular site or project, or for general floodplain meadow information.
