An Introduction to Floodplain Meadows

Thanks to the support of Anglian Water’s Get River Positive grant scheme, a new free module from the Open University explores how the floodplain meadow landscape can deliver a range of nature-based solutions that will improve our environment.   The Open Learn module An introduction to floodplain meadows will help you to learn about this unique environment,  increasing your knowledge in ecology, hydrology, soil science and nutrient management,  alongside better awareness of how the issues of climate change, eco anxiety and food security relate to this habitat.

The module also offers a unique opportunity to contribute to future research priorities of the OU in this area.  In each case, the authors have offered an overview of current knowledge. Each of them could be further informed by new research and we would welcome your contribution to what this could be in Section 7, alongside a wider survey which will help us to provide better online experiences for all our learners.

The authors consulted with the representatives from the Dadima’s Community Interest Company , and teachers from Denbigh School in Milton Keynes  in selecting content for this course.  There are 6 sections covered by the module examining:

  • the need to adapt to our changing climate and the role that floodplain meadows can play in reducing damage, while mitigating against future warming of our planet
  • the ability of the ground surface to absorb water, and the role of floodplain meadows in managing flood risk
  • the rationale for why floodplain meadows can become an important element of sustainable food production
  • the significance of biodiversity for resilience within plant communities in floodplain meadows
  • the relationship between nature and our health and wellbeing, exploring the potential for de-stressing, exercise, learning and action, but also eco-anxiety in the light of our changing climate and loss of habitats and biodiversity
  • the increase of nitrogen and phosphorus in water courses, and how management and restoration of floodplain meadows can trap and use these nutrients in a positive way, including for food production and habitat provision

We advise that you register onto the Open Learn system as this will provide access to interactive features, and opportunities to develop your skills in critical reasoning using set questions, enabling you to review the information provided in the module.  OpenLearn is a free learning platform, delivered by The Open University as part of its Royal Charter commitment to support the wellbeing of the community.

Please do share this free module with your own networks – with the forthcoming Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier option this will be an invaluable information tool allowing greater awareness and understanding of floodplain meadows.
